I am primarily a figurative artist. Here are a few of my paintings. I believe in the beauty of the human form in all of its stages. I try to find and capture what makes a person unique. In my narrative pieces, I use the figure as a metaphor to tell a story. In this way, I think we see hints of the beauty and complexity of the human experience we all share.
Skillful drawing is essential to good realistic painting. When possible I prefer to draw and paint from life. I made this drawing in Paris a few months ago while I attended a workshop. We drew from a model in the mornings in the Montmartre studio then went to the Louvre in the afternoon to draw from sculptures. There is a quality to naturally observed work that captures the feelings of the artist, the subject, and that particular moment in time when it was created.
At best art captures life in fleeting yet telling moments. They say that the human face is a meeting place of two unknowns, the infinity of the outer world and the uncharted inner world to which we alone have access. I love painting people. The whole process is interesting, from the first meeting to the exciting moment when the canvas comes to life.
Narrative Art is that which tells a story. Some of the earliest evidence of art such as cave paintings shows that people told stories with pictures. This element is not necessarily found in portraits, landscapes, or still-life paintings. Narrative Art invites the viewer into the painting to engage in a visual puzzle.
